It’s no secret that Land Rover has many options for accessories. The aftermarket accessories for the Land Rover line keeps expanding. One of the most noticed upgrade accessories is the Land Rover wood grain steering wheel. The Land Rover LR3 wood grain steering wheel is hand crafted by artisans that have been apprentices in the trade for many years. It takes 3-4 weeks to make one of the LR3 steering wheels into a gem.

The OEM steering wheel is cut and stripped from is urethane composite material in the upper third of the wheel and the lower fifth. This is where the wood grain or carbon fiber will be added to the wheel. The wheel is then placed into a mold to make the hard substrate for about 5-7 days after it will sit so the material will shrink and then prepped for sanding and shaping. Once the sanding and shaping of the wheel is finished the we move on to adding the wood grain finish of choice. The most popular color that Simon Wood Dashes uses is its own color of California burl.

The material is laid up onto the steering wheel and then 4 coats of a special proprietary clear coat is added. It will dry for 2 days then color sanded to knock off and dust or containments that landed on the wheel while it was in the spray booth. Then it will be brought over to the leather shop and stitched the Connolly leather to match the factory interior colors.

It’s sound simple enough and it is it just takes time to do. To install the LR3 wood grain dash it you will need to take your vehicle to the Land Rover Dealer and have a trained technician install your steering wheel and wood grain dash. I don’t recommend that any DIY attempt to install it these items since it does take some knowledge and skill, but most importantly special tools.
